Kathy McLeish is a senior journalist with ABC news and current affairs who has reported widely across ABC programs including 7.30, Landline, Australian Story, ABC news, and ABC radio current affairs programs. She’s been the executive producer of Stateline and 7.30 Qld and produced several documentaries for ABC programs. As a reporter, she’s covered assignments across a wide field - from race correspondent for the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, the covering the Nauru detention centre riots, the last Mentoring Taskforce handover in Afghanistan, the Queensland disasters, she’s also trekked in the Simpson desert after floods and seen an exceptionally rare night parrot in the wild. She was named Queensland Journalist of the Year and Investigative journalist of the year for her stories which exposed serious political and bureaucratic failures caused the closure of the state’s youth mental health facility, leading to the death of three teenagers. A $15-million-dollar inquiry was launched in response to the coverage and a massive restructure of youth mental health services in Queensland is now underway as a result. Kathy is convenor and a founding member of Women in Media, Queensland.
