Siddharth Varadarajan is a Founding Editor of The Wire (www.thewire.in), India's leading independent news and analysis site. He was earlier the editor in chief of The Hindu newspaper. A trained economist, he taught at New York University before joining The Times of India as a leader writer in 1995. As a reporter, he has covered the NATO war against Yugoslavia, the humanitarian crisis in Iraq during post Gulf War sanctions, and the Kashmir problem. He was one of the few international journalists to visit and write about Afghanistan during Taliban rule. His 2002 book Gujarat: The Making of a Tragedy, was the first book-length account of the anti-Muslim violence that took the lives of 1500 people in the Indian state. He has taught journalism at the Graduate School of Journalism, University of California, Berkeley, and has been a Poynter Media Fellow at Yale University. He is a recipient of the Ramnath Goenka Award for Excellence in Journalism—India's premier journalism prize, and the Elizabeth Neuffer Memorial Prize for his coverage of the Iranian nuclear issue.
